An important part of starting a business is knowing how to set goals for yourself and learning how to manage your time effectively.

Here are some basic goal setting tips:

  • Write your goal down
  • Map out the steps you need to take to get there
  • Start with step 1, without worrying about the others
  • Tackle each step one at a time

Keep your eye on the prize!

Here’s a simple example to give you an idea of what we mean:

My goal is… to build a sand castle

  1. Pick a flat spot with fine sand
  2. Make sure sand is moist
  3. Use pails of different sizes
  4. Carve out design
  5. Gather shells and decorate

Now, it’s time for you to practice. Complete the activity below; it may be a simple example, but it’s a great way to get you thinking about how to break down your goal into manageable steps.

My goal is... to make a sandwich

Based on this goal, what steps do you need to take?

Map them out below. Then, you can start your journey with step 1 without worrying about the others. Even a marathon starts with just one step.

Time Management

When you’re trying to manage your time (a big part of being an entrepreneur), it can be really useful to create a Time Management Matrix for yourself.

The Matrix will help you map out your time by dividing it up into four quadrants. It also helps you organize your time by the two main criteria you should use when you evaluate the things you need to do: importance and urgency. Urgent tasks are the ones that you have to pay immediate attention to. Important tasks are the ones that contribute to your goals, your mission, and your values.

Although we sometimes can’t help but deal with emergencies or deadlines (Quadrant 1), you don’t want to get stuck only focusing on those. You should also avoid interruptions and distractions (Quadrant 3) and time wasters (Quadrant 4). So, what you’re aiming to focus on is that upper right quadrant (Quadrant 2): tasks that are important but not urgent. Quality time focuses on planning, building relationships, recognizing new opportunities, and many other things that are very important for entrepreneurs.
