Your Story

You went through the exercise of imagining yourself a year from when you first began this course having had achieved all your goals. You were then asked to reflect on what you’d accomplished in that year.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I took this course last year, as I was at a point of great change in my life. I had recently become wheelchair bound, and lost my job, and really discovered how intolerant people are to diversity. I needed a job, a passion to throw myself into, and this course came along at the perfect time. I had for two years already been dreaming of creating my own business, and now I had the platform to do it. My goals and dreams where to create a cost effective, safe, and ergonomic mobility harness for service dogs and their handlers. While doing this and to supplement the income at the time I was going to also create accessories, such as leashes and collars, and other items that I would be hired to create for the customers. I hoped to start looking into creating a new research project around the ergonomics and safety concerns of harness design and its effects on the dogs wearing them, to have a prototype in the testing phase, and equipment in order to begin manufacturing these prototypes.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Over the year through the knowledge I gained from this course, networking, my mentor and my customers, Through many hours of diligent work, brainstorming, knowledge gathering from experts and the customers , I was able to achieve my goal of designing a mobility harness. Along with this, through the use of grant and loan money I was able to procure the tools and items needed to start creating prototypes. Subsequently through contacts I made I was also able to start talks about researching the effects of harness designs on the canines wearing them.

What is your life like now?

I was able to achieve a design prototype, I am in discussions with individuals about a dedicated research project looking at the impacts of harness designs on our animal companions and testing different designs to find the most ergonomic and safe options, in order to better serve my customers and the pet community as a whole. I have built a successful client base, and I have a great relationship with them and I am able to help create other items to meet their individual and unique needs.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted to have a structured, guided learning process to support my ambitions of developing my own profitable company that would allow me to support other local organizations aimed towards social impact within the community.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Persistence, hard work, and mentorship.

What is your life like now?

I’ve been able to collaborate with two other colleagues within my business to provide consultation services for non-profit and charity organizations based on our education and professional expertise. We have supported 4 organizations in accessing grant funding for their projects – including an international project in Haiti aimed at education and gender equality. These organizations benefited through consultations to help them improve their project, which includes the necessary partnerships and stakeholder engagement needed to reach success. Our profits predominately came from grants obtained by these organizations as a result of our services, whereby we take 10% of their funding. This resulted in a grand total of $25,000 for the year, as we helped these organizations obtain a total of $250,000 over the year.

Your Story

At the time, I wanted to learn more hard business skills. I had plenty of drive and creativity, but wasn’t very good at keeping track of things like finances.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

A lot of up-time! Even when I was on vacation I did my best to answer customer messages, and even came up with new ideas while trying to think of nothing important. I guess you could say even my down-time was filled with (passive) work.

What is your life like now?

Many things have changed. Last year I was struggling to get by on ODSP. Within a couple of months, all my bills were paid, and I was even able to do things like insure my dog! I couldn’t have done any of that without the unexpectedly large workload that came with starting my business. My projections were totally blown away by the actual response to my products!

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

What made me want to take this course is that. I have always had that entrepreneurship mind since I was a little kid. I have bin brought up in a very caring family who have had a lot of success in the financial world. When I was grade 9 I got my first Iphone from there I start to discover Apps I found this article it was called why to apps fail. From there I was hocked on apps I did not know how to code but I did know that for an app to keep running there would have to be VC. So what do you think I did is that i read an article on what a VC did. In 1 year from now I would like to have an App on the App Store or I would like to work at a real estate company. The way I got this job in real estate is that I got an intership and then I work from the bottom and that I work my way up the ladder. in 1 year if I get this app on the App Store I would tell them it has to do with you work ethic you Just need to put in the work”do not be afraid if the app fails”. Were I see my self in 1 year from now is to be working in a steady job so this would be working at a real estate company.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I hope to gain information about how a business is run and important stepping stones and information to actualize the practice. I have a lot of the right ideas, relevant experience, and a unique idea. I’m missing the momentum and additional funds to turn my concept into concrete reality. I would like to learn how to actualize my business, steps required with financing, and serious considerations or risks to be aware of. I hope to gain insights from the other students in the program who are likely in a similar state to me. I also hope to gain forms or documents that can help me structure my thinking. Sometimes my anxiety can be overwhelming and my notes, tasks, and objectives are all over the place. Learning organization skills will definitely be an important element to take away from the Youth Small Business Program.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

A major way that I achieved my goals in 2018 was through putting myself out there and applying my own skills and mentality towards getting those goals done. I stepped up my responsibility as an adult and completed what I needed to do. I also learnt a lot from failing to achieve other goals and why I was falling behind in some aspects.

What is your life like now?

Primarily in my free time I keep myself busy with either creating art as gifts or for commissioned pieces. Right now, a majority of my free time is spent learning skills required to create a documentary. I am compiling all the video content that I acquired while travelling in Sri Lanka this past summer and putting it all together to tell the story of the plight that elephants face in human populated areas.

My experience in videography is primarily based on working with local London businesses already as well as with Non-profit organizations in London.
I acquired a DJI Mavic Pro drone earlier this year in preparation for a trip to Sri Lanka that I won from an online scholarship. While travelling, I reached out to several organizations, hostels, and travel lodges and offered my services as a videographer in exchange for food and accommodation. I have built my portfolio that way.
In terms of mural design, since I was at high-school, I have been involved with designing murals and sharing my ideas with the public. I am a visual artist and very active in the community to share my skills already in exchange for goods or services or money. Now I want to legitimize my business by bringing others into the mix. I additionally have done several murals in Montreal, Quebec from my time there as a student. The murals were primarily with Beaux Dégâts, an art competition.

My goal and dream was to create my first autonomous passive income generating business “Mr.Outside Property Maintenance,” with Learning Initiative.

Once I got my insurance, I began by securing a seasonal contract with ______; I used the money to buy equipment for the job, and began to do the job myself. After my third contract, I decided to hire 2 employees on a per-call contract at ~2$ above minimum wage to cover the contracts and any other “pushes” or “per-call” events.

I have been considering running a side-business by repairing computers at the venue and selling new and used components. I’ve also expanded my collection, by offering rarer games on older consoles, doubled my total PC count from 12 to 24 total units to offer more people the chance to play.

I was also reached by multiple brands for different sponsorships which will help with running costs, and add more prizes and value to our tournaments and events.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

To Learn Everything there is to know about Business, financing, advertising, sales, marketing, customer service, pleasing public, making a positive difference, providing a service that with make others happy/healthier/more confident/and/or/gain SOMETHING from the IDEA/GROUP/THING/or/SERVICE i am providing.
I want to create my own side business to captivate and use my skills, talents, and knowledge to best use. Working in a business doing something that I LOVE TO DO, and can share my passions to create motivation for myself and that will give me a sense of purpose, success, and to the ability to Dream even BIGGER.
I live for creativity and learning, helping and healing, strengthening and growing, for both myself and others around me.
I have spent my entire life learning in school, art, psychology and many other subjects with my B.A. I’m ready to take what I have learnt and start putting it to use so that I feel like it was all for SOMETHING, rather then that is was all for NOTHING.

>>>>future>> I took it because I wanted to learn about business, I wanted to get out of the house, I wanted to activate my brain, and study something new. I wanted to develop skills, and confidence, and have a better idea of my skills and abilities to be the type of person it takes to be a Therapist. I have my doubts that I’m not good enough. I took this course in hopes it can help me answer these questions. My goal Right now it to be better at Time Management, Focus, Organization, Confidence, and to find…. hope.

Setting Goals is setting yourself up for disappointment. What happens happens, there is no control over the outcome, I can hope for the best, but I’ll probably be let down, dreams are dream because thats all they are. Dream is a wish that could come true, but there are no guarantees it will.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Doing a Paint night Business, will be challenging for me because I will have to be a leader, I will need to be organized and be consistently professional. These are roles I have experience in, but I do feel like there is room for IMPROVEMENT, which is why I want to create a job for myself to develop these skills that I will need for my future career GOAL AND DREAM. This type of risk, self work, and business, will provide me with a clearer understanding of my professional, and leadership capabilities, and ability to organize myself into success.

My Dream is to be a Professional Registered Artistic Psychotherapist.

I need to Improve skills and Confidence and to re-ignite my passion & desire to FINISH my thesis, continue practicum, and complete my Masters Level Degree from the Toronto Art Therapy Institute that I started in January of 2015.

Over the last year, I have been focusing on myself, relationships, personal life & health. I haven’t been focused on my goals. I actually gave up all my goals.

>>>>>future>>>>I did a business course and seminars at the SBC, & took advantage of free services to improve myself, and learn about business. To implement my personal ideas into a potential business plan, that might actually work, might be fun, and may even be successful.
A year from now, If I have run 4 paint nights with 4+ people that will be a success in itself. If I make enough money to cover renal fees, materials, travel, time and setup, then that is a SUCESS. If I make a Profit that is Priceless. I could see myself running several Paint Nights a Year up into my old age, if this can turn into a business on the side.
If it is a financial success, I would be more passionate to develop the business further, and teach and hire others to work alongside me/ under me/ for me to provide theses services more regularly, with more topics, and more various levels of SKILL teaching classes. I COULD BE A ART TEACHER EVEN!
hmm, maybe Ill take Concurrent-education. **

What is your life like now?

My life is a disappointment.
I have artistic talent, sure…
I have a passion to help others.
I have a strong understanding of others with my knowledge of psychology.
I have some understanding of myself to a certain extent with my psychology background.
I am an empath, and I care deeply for others, and feel for them.
I get tired from social events, as they seem to drain my energies.
I like to prepare myself for new things, that otherwise I would be anxious for, so that I can be cool, calm, collected, and confident in-front of peers or public when needing to present/lead/or be of authority.
I also enjoy sitting back and just being someone who is a approachable and not over bearing.

I guess, I have accomplished some skills and talents, and gained some useful knowledge (that needs to be fostered, organized, reviewed and put INTO PRACTICE, in order for it to be useful in my future. I need to know how to connect into and draw on my knowledge to be able to verbalize it to share what I know… If I want others to benefit and learn about themselves and psychology the way I internally understand it, [but yet do not have the words for regurgitating the psychological theories with a sense of Ease to others, in a professional clinical way. . . If i choose to continue my journey to be an Art Therapist.] For others to benefit, I need to grow into my professional self more and have more belief in myself and my ability to help others and any ability to be successful while doing it. Otherwise it wont be worth while. Schooling would have been pointless. I will regret. I will wish I was just a Farmer in the field.
hmmm… maybe Ill go to agricultural school at Ridgetown. **

AND>>> I just finished and realized I need to write this as a year forward not the year just past.
>>My Business will be regular creative fun silly amazing skill building group session painting groups, tailored to different needs and abilities. People will take home their creations to hang in their room and be proud that they tried something new, or learnt a new skill, or made a good memory, or creating something beautiful, or made the painting as a gift to someone special. I want my customers to discover something new about themselves every time they come to a sessions, gain skills, confidence, friends, and positive memories, not just an artwork to go home with. AKA Underground Therapy

Seeing the feedback and sales from this fun and creative project, I wondered if I could use this as a creative outlet and also as a way to make some income. My goals were to create a Facebook page, a website and create several prototypes of different style wands. I wanted to be able to sell wands online, in small business and at events.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I was having issues staying motivated while I went to the library every other day to work on my buiness plan. I just seemed like there was so much to do and it felt a little bit overwhelming- kind of like trying to formulate the first sentence of a short story or essay. I had taken a similar program in 2014 and very much enjoyed the learning environment. It made me feel energized to be around other young adults also trying to work on their business who needed to jump through the same hurdles.

My ambition at the time was to take take related classes in schooling to teach myself business skills and program knowledge while planning out this lean business plan. Now that I have my business plan, a bit more hands on knowledge as an apiculturist, and some related schooling to bee keeping, my business plan is much more solidified for the time when I am ready to launch.

What is your life like now?

I’m working hard in my program learning about legislation, planning, best practices, and governemt policies related to commercial beekeeping. I have my own personal hive in a local garden or a backyard where I can observe and apply my learning from school in a small scale. My life is busy but very rewarding and I can’t wait to graduate, work in the field for two years, then launch my small business venture at age 28.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted a comfortable work/Life balance, and to find the right niche of clientele for my designs.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I decided to start reaching out to local business, at first with email, and then with phone calls and face to face marketing. I also built up a presence on social media and started my website. These things allowed me to connect with the people that were interested in what I was doing.

What is your life like now?

I now have the motivation to wake up and get creative! I have the flexibility to schedule my own appointments when necessary, but ensure that I am designing a full 5+ hours every weekday. I now have a list of 10 repeating clients, and have built up credibility as a designer.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

FCC began as a hobby project – I enjoy foraging for wild food and do so as often as I can. Throughout my thesis project I’ve interfaced with numerous industry craft beverage producers and have discussed my foraging hobby. This is where I first realized industry interest in wild foraged produce – these producers began asking if I could forage ingredients for their own operations.
At the time I was going through a very rough path, rather depressed and without a clear goal. I’ve always known I’d like to be involved with the agri-food industry and eventually own a farm. So at the time my goal was to find employment in this area.
This year, I’ve continued building working relationships with members of the craft beverage industry and have found that they are super interested in the type of foraging that I do. Also I found that there is a lack of local producers of many of cultivated ingredients that they’d like to try using in their products. This is when I realized I had the opportunity to meet these new demands by pursuing a business of my own and jump starting my goals of owning a farm.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Over the last year I’ve dealt with fairly severe mental health issues and had a significant mental health break. At this point, with the help of friends and family, I sought treatment for my health issues and have made significant progress. After achieving a great level of stability with the support of many people – I’ve been able to focus on achieving my goals to the fullest of my ability.

What is your life like now?

Life right now is pretty great. I’m in contact with a number of craft beverage producers that want to contract me for foraging produce or growing ingredients for them this upcoming summer. Meeting with some larger cideries very soon and hope to advertise my products during these meetings. I’ve amassed a fairly large social media following on instagram at www.instagram.com/nicolas.querques and launched a website at www.nicolasquerques.com or feralcollective.club . Today I’m going to an event where my foraged apples from last season are being featured in a collaborative craft beverage release party at bar hop bar in Toronto.

I am finishing up my thesis and starting this business and so I’m incredibly busy – and this is just how I like things. I can’t wait to get going on my business.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I’ve established a viable and growing small business. I am recognized by my competitors as having something different, and maybe being a threat. I am getting a steady inflow of inquiries about dates for our official launch this year 2020 (after the trial launch summer 2019). I have secure partnerships with businesses around Ottawa and have a solid networking base of like-minded professionals I can count on for different aspects of running my business.
I am, otherwise, a one-woman show/generalist; I have learned and can operate all of the tasks required on my own – accounting (costs of operation, projections for future, payroll/budgeting, invoicing and taking payments), marketing (understand my demographic, using tech tools to automate and ease the process) basic legal (understanding contracts, laws that apply to me, registration). I still get to be “on the ground” and face-to-face with my clients so that I get real-time feedback on ideas for my ever-evolving business.
Last year, I decided to take this course because I knew how to teach, I knew I loved to travel, but I didn’t know what skills I needed in order to not lose money. I was scared of the insecurity, and afraid of the time commitment it would take to do “it all”. My goals at the time were only to be a teacher and to travel, and to experiment with “what is possible”. I decided to take the course to push myself into the risk of a business with a safety net – I didn’t know that this would be my forever dream, I thought it was just a temporary project or a new exciting thing to try. I was afraid of failure but ready to learn.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I asked a lot of questions. I asked for help. I networked and talked to the right people. I listened to suggestions and feedback and had good (sometimes difficult) discussions to make good (sometimes not good, sometimes difficult) decisions. I got better at making decisions – or at least faster, and reflected on them to make better ones next time. I became more self-aware of the barriers that I personally put up for myself in reaching my goals, and found ways to overcome them. For example, I was afraid of losing money or being reliant on my family; so I found a way to start with very minimal start-up capital/investment and I accepted a proposal from partners who wanted to work together so we could compliment each others strengths and share the difficulties. I Never. Stopped. Reading. And Learning. Books, courses, articles, podcasts, magazines, newspapers, social media posts – about: Entrepreneurs & start ups, efficiency and time management, making decisions, marketing, accounting, learning a second language (French, for me), reviews on products/games/electronic services, professional teaching articles, adult education theory, popular attractions in Ottawa, and client feedback/reviews.

What is your life like now?

My life is busy, but I love it. I need to start considering how to hire someone to take on some of the classes or social activities at the school I’m running so that I can start to spend more time on reflecting on the business direction, but I can’t imagine not having any face-to-face time with my clients/students. I’m itching to travel and will talk to my business partners about how to do this effectively.
We started with just one class level because I was the only teacher. But our demand is higher than we can offer – we now have 2 additional teachers and an afternoon ‘facilitator’ for activities for our 3 classes in order to keep up with demand (beginner, intermediate and advanced); but maybe this will go back down to 2 classes in the winter. Our classes can only fit 16 students maximum, and we’re exceeding that in requests at certain times. We are getting deposits up to a year in advance and for long-term stays, which is good for our planning. We have been operating out of a shared business space, kind of ‘floating’ for the last year, but we are now ready to invest in our own property and really make it ‘ours’.
We have been getting creative in our excursions and activities so that we can accommodate more people – since they’re adults, they don’t need to be with a teacher all of the time, so we are learning how to optimize and maybe take on more students than our original model allowed. We still have to figure this out but we’re using student feedback to help. Our student feedback has been extremely positive – anything negative has been so valuable. Our students are our biggest source of future clients; they serve as agents when they return to their home countries.
I have a fabulous website with forms to track client leads and scheduling, invoicing and payments are automatic which really reduces the amount of administrative time I need to dedicate. With our new location, we are launching our Zoom live feed as an additional option for former students which could increase revenue at minimal cost – this is very exciting 🙂

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I was looking for the tools and concepts I needed to start to build something within reach that was also up to date and effective. My goal was to build a part time business that helped me pay down my debt and work directly with artists.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I started small, with one client. I then asked that client for feedback throughout our time together. I also asked them for referrals and testimonials. I charged a fair price. I managed my time and let myself stick to the simple systems I created.

What is your life like now?

I feel traction. I am working with three artists and bringing in 5k annually. I feel connected to the creative community in a meaningful way.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted to have a chance to really sit down and figure out the steps I needed to take in order to transform my art business into a profitable venture. My goals were: to gain a better understanding of who my customer is, to figure out how to best market my art (i.e is there a niche market for my art that I can capitalize on?), determine what I wanted my art business to look like (i.e am I only earning money off my paintings, or will I offer other services as well?), and learn more about the nitty gritty of operating a business (i.e taxes, managing/recording inventory, etc). At the time, my ultimate dream was to make my living off my art.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I forced myself out of my comfort zone and did some market research by informally interviewing people at craft fairs, art galleries, etc to determine why/why don’t they buy art. I attended local galleries to see what other artists were creating and how much they were selling it for to try to determine if there was a particular need in the art market. I continue to research online (Instagram) to see if my art fits into any particular niche. I looked at other artist profiles to try to determine the best ways of marketing myself and my story. I took time to really reflect on what I actually like creating/doing and what I’d rather not do.

What is your life like now?

I’m still a ways off from making a living off my art. BUT, I have a clear direction for my business and a solid business plan that will serve as a good road map moving forward. I continue to network and take business/art workshops. I’m also beginning to offer workshops to amateur artists. I’m still working with Square Lemon, and sell at most of the Square Lemon markets as Robyn Lester Art. It’s a challenge to keep generating product for these markets, however, I’m now connected with a local printer and am mass producing some smaller items to sell (cards, book marks, etc)

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I had this ambition since 2015. I just found about this program this year. If I knew it before, I would have joined the program before.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Last year I was just schooling and learning some sewing on youtube.

What is your life like now?

Right now, I am in business school. I am also doing more research on how I will start my business. I try to see what really the customer will like about the product that I will be selling and I am also doing more research for a competitor. I am hoping that after this program I will have an idea of opening my own business.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I chose to take this course least year because I wanted to take steps to understanding how to properly market myself and budget myself as an illustrator. My goals were to receive regular customer orders and purchase requests from my customers. I also created a children’s book and a interactive comic book.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

In order to achieve my goals I created a fully functional, mobile friendly web sight and shop. I linked the web sight to my social media accounts and began posting daily in order to attract customers. I also obtained photo editing sofwhear on my computer so that I could create affordable prints of the artworks that I have created. While this was happening I finished plot lines for the children’s books and comic book. these are some of the pieces i’be been posting on social media. I also finished the character designs and thumbnails for the illustrations. After I finished the plot lines I began writing the stories. After that was done I created the illustrations and had the book printed.

What is your life like now?

Well as I said I’m busy with customers drawings and paintings for people. I’m able to decide which commissions to take and which aren’t worth my time. Also, I’m working on some more children’s books and posting my progress on social media. My interactive comic book is very successful and popular among children. I’m thinking about digitizing it and turning it into an app.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

The past year has been a blur. It’s been busy and overwhelming at times, but things are finally settling into a good rhythm. When I started the Enterprising Youth program a year ago, I was doing some freelancing, but it was irregular, and only made up about 20% of my income, and my clients were limited. I felt anxious approaching new people, didn’t know how to market myself, or the details of what sort of services I wanted to offer.

I decided to focus on storytelling and content management: focusing primarily on promotional and web writing and editing, along with social media content creation.

In the first few months after the training, I really focused on sourcing new clients locally. Before long, I was doing more blogging and marketing writing for a couple local businesses, and I had made some valuable contacts in the tourism, hospitality, arts and culture sectors. In the second half of the year, over the winter, business picked up and I finally had some regular clients who I started writing for. Today, my freelancing makes up 50% of my income, and I think within another year, I’ll be working for myself nearly, if not completely, full time.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I found breaking my goals down into small, digestible tidbits made them easier to achieve. Rather than aiming for gaining four new clients, I framed it as spending a few hours researching potential clients, developing pitches for them, then reaching out to them one at a time to see how it went. Before long, I’d built a number of relationships, and eventually, that led to jobs.

Another way I achieved my goals was by asking for help: reaching out to friends and acquaintances for their recommendations and advice on who might need work done, what they’d want from someone in my position, and generally making use of my existing network.

What is your life like now?

Life is all about balance now. I work about 30 hours a week, although sometimes it’s only 20 and others it’s closer to 40 when you count the volunteer positions I’ve taken on. I earn a little more than I did in my previous job, working 28 hours a week, and it’s enough to support me for now.

I have a range of clients who I manage blogs for, write and edit press releases, promotional materials, and web content for. I feel comfortable marketing myself to new clients and am hoping to increase business in the next year.

People in town are starting to know me as the go-to for writing and content production that melds with their existing branding while still offering a bright, vibrant addition to their existing products.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

My friend, Kassie, referred me to the course and I saw I had nothing to lose and possibly something to gain. I do not like the idea of my books being referred to as a ‘business’ but rather a career. Perhaps it is simply the word ‘business’ that bugs me… I just picture a buncha guys in suits talking about taxes and how nice the weather is. Either way, I was unsure of this new approach. While the beginning did feel juvenile as I had already developed most of my business plan and had not realized how far along I was until I was relearning things I already knew, I did not have the financial part in order, which is pretty important. My goals were to learn about the financial field for ‘business’ and how to budget and work on cash flow. My goals/dreams/ambitions were to start with books, and then branch out to more things including but not limited to: Animated cartoons (TV/movies), stickers, shirts, my book characters themed merchandise, toys, CDs. I could go on, but it’s 3am.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Hey, I know I’m supposed to be picturing this but I’m still doing the course and I do not know what the future will look like from here. My mom is still in the nursing home. She had a stroke. I can’t do this without her. I am stressed. How will I achieve my goals? Your guess is as good as mine.

What is your life like now?

I don’t want to be prideful and brag. I am not about that. Life is good. It is cute to see kids wearing shirts with my art on them…

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I had no clear goals other than to get myself started.
On the other hand, I did have pressing ambitions that were eating away at me.
I’m very glad I pushed myself to accept that I had no goals, because finding a goal became my goal.

I had always been brilliantly successful building supplier, and customer relations at every previous place of employment. It was clear to me that I could do something even greater if the purpose was for myself, and with my abilities to craft.

The last thought that comes to mind when I try to think back to a year ago is;
I knew if I didn’t start building something of substance in my life soon, I would be denying myself a chance to change.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

It can be said that I did the work to maintain a relationship with all of my ideas. I sat down, did the research, created a map of routes to take and continuously recommitted to things never being completely perfect.

I explored every idea at least once, and sometimes more. I readjusted myself, and my ideas many times. Even now, I am not finished.

In one word? Recommitment.

What is your life like now?

I wasn’t sure if I would be launching during the class, but in the beginning a huge part of me got nervous/excited and really wanted to rush for it. In retrospect, I am now glad I waited.

I did my due diligence, created a small line of hoods to truly capture the aesthetic I wanted to portray, marketed my online accounts with my created “look”, and watched my ambitions evolve into what they are today!

By the time I was finally pulling in enough attention to begin receiving custom requests, and work with my customers on an individual basis, I had enough of an understanding in what I was doing to flourish.

I’m getting more calls, and need to spend time/money on advertising less and less. I’m contracting a piano teacher to teach piano at my studio and at clients’ homes. Things are going well!

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

Being a recent graduate, I wanted to find opportunities to build my own company instead of settling into a 9-5 job. I’ve been working with artist and creatives for years, including being an artist myself, and I’ve noticed the struggles we creative entrepreneurs go through. Knowing my strengths – i.e. marketing, advertising, and strategizing – I wanted to help my fellow artists with their business ventures by being a resource to them. With the help of my business partners, I started to look for an entrepreneurship program that I can participate in and help with the business planning so the company can have a viable foundation.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

ACT, ACT, ACT. I’m great at planning, but I have acted on those plans on a small scale so we can learn from those experiences. From that, we’ve built great business partnerships to keep elevating what we’re offering to our artists. I’ve also done research and secured on funding that helps with capital.

We have 3 clients under us who are so diverse that we can keep building in their brand and in turn, establish multiple revenue streams. We’re being recognized in the music industry and by companies who want to be a part of the primary stages of the business.

I decided to take this course last year because I have long felt a pull towards meeting current challenges through social enterprise, changing my daily environment to be more suited to my well-being, and achieving a positive financial and career trajectory. My goals or ambitions were to see if this business idea was viable, set out a plan to give it a go and contribute towards justice and environmental resilience in doing so.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I achieved my goals over the last year by learning new skills, making a plan, managing my time well, seeing the big picture and taking initiative.

What is your life like now?

This season, we are in full swing with multiple partnerships established, and systems in place for gathering, restoration, gardening, baking and selling. We have been able to redistribute wealth to important community needs and strengthened ecosystem pathways in an urban environment. Alongside Indigenous Matriarchs, we have connected gatherers with economic opportunity and residents and tourists with local foods. Through strengthening knowledge of Indigenous plants and practices, and connection between residents and the earth in their neighborhood, we have contributed to an ethos of environmentalism and decolonization. We have created low-barrier isolated commitment employment opportunities for members of our community facing marginalization and stigma.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted to get a better understanding of the details in starting a business, which include doing taxes, advertising, how to build a client base. My goals at that time were to figure out how to navigate uncertainty while starting a business for the first time. I want to establish a client base that can provide part time hours for me on the side. I also wanted to perfect my teaching approach for students.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I took part in the program. I asked questions when needed to the mentors/facilitators in the program. It gave me more clarity as to how to navigate uncertainties. I started off with 1-3 students at a time and took on students slowly from there. This was to allow myself to ease into teaching and to allow myself to make adjustments to how I was managing the business.

What is your life like now?

My life has more freedom in terms of setting my own hours. I make a decent amount of income through students. I enjoy connecting with my students, the work is hard at times but rewarding in the ways that I love guitar and teaching. I get to fire my students and pick people who I want to work with. I don’t have to compromise between my identity and having a source of income. I’m loving how I can use a passion, playing guitar and in some way make money off of it. I love hearing about other’s experiences and enjoy what students can teach me as well.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I always knew I wanted to own/start a business. However, due to my circumstances that never seemed realistic for my life. I did not come from riches nor did I have any. I had been on my own since 15 years old, and after my second child at 25 I knew it was time to make something of it. However, for the life of me, I could not find any valued or trustworthy help, resource, or services regarding business and finance for people like me (over 24 no longer a “youth” no professional credentials or education) nor within my city. So, I took it in my own hands and began seeking financial literacy, asset building, and passive income. It was through these experiences that I quickly realized I needed a business. I began working on a few ideas but felt stuck due to lack of knowledge and/or resources (really felt like there were no services in Toronto to help me become a businesswoman, especially due to my circumstances), and possibly delusional as I identify with mental health issues. At the time I had invested in a small opportunity that was to act as a source of income, but I quickly realized I had a lot more to learn about business and entrepreneurship. As I continued to study and seek help I met others who were too trying to build their businesses. So I began promoting them. This is where I realized that there are resources in our neighborhoods by the people for the people. Others just did not know about them. This is where I began writing on my business idea COLLABORHOOD. Shortly after that, I came across an email promoting RISE ASSET DEVELOPMENT and boom, here we are!

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I applied myself. I wanted to learn more about business and finance so I read books, attended and signed up for seminars /webinars, invested in a few financial resources (ebooks, courses, events), hung around like-minded individuals, and even turned my regular social media profiles to business profiles to begin building my brand and helping promote others. I have bulldozed through a lot of my fears and anxieties which has brought forth change within not only my mind but life. I look forward to approaching this program and opportunity with both hands so that I can begin achieving my goals towards next year!

What is your life like now?

Nowadays life is busy! Being a mommy, wife, employee, and entrepreneur there is always something to be done! However, my life feels much more purposeful now. I am not only living for myself, deciding to become a businesswoman has placed me in a seat of responsibility for not only myself, but my children, community, and future generations to come. My ideas are not as naive as they use to be, now I have realistic approaches and visions. I have started an online boutique store (work in progress), turning my social media accounts into business accounts which allows me to work on my brand every day. I have attracted like-minded individuals and even inspired many people to begin investing in their selves and future. Now I am working on my second business, COLLABORHOOD, through the enterpRise Youth Program, which is intended to be an online neighborhood resource center offering valid and verified resources, information, and opportunities to citizens of TORONTO. An online resource center that would have helped me from the age of 15 in regards to finding valuable information, resources, and opportunities that may make achieving one’s goals or simply living, easier.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I was told by my partner about a learning opportunity to make my idea into a business. I was working as a groomer for a big corporation and realized that the needs of the pets and the wants of the pet parents were not being aknowledged.

Over the last year I had to modify the way i thought about my idea. My vision has not been sacrificed but instead enhanced by my customer feedback.

We now do our community engagement events where we grooms shelter dogs and post their pics on social media to instigate more adoption of shelter animals. We also now have fixed monthly fees for the elderly people that have pets but cant afford a fluctuating cost.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

After suffering a spinal cord injury on May 10, 2011, I realize that living life with a disability is very difficult and there are immense barriers to access aspects of daily living. I have advocated create change and start making a difference when it comes to accessibility within Ontario with my business idea of consulting in regards to the AODA standards that are to be implemented on January 1, 2025.

My business idea and plan is to provide consulting to businesses on how their business is doing in relation to the standards set out and what they need to do to become compliant with them by January 2025. The business will also provide products to help reduce barriers and increase inclusion within the world and Ontario communities.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Over the past year, I have done a number of public speaking engagements in relation to accessibility and creating an environment that is inclusive to all of those that surround us on a regular basis. It is now time to put the consulting side of things into full force and build my business around creating barrier-free environments for those who live with disabilities. It is time to start changing the way people look at accessibility and make sure that inclusion and acceptance is part of the strategy for creating a barrier-free world.

What is your life like now?

Still working on getting a successful part of my business working and have started to focus on creating a more permanent business strategy and goals to create a successful future for myself.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

The need to start my own grooming salon, and have enough customers to maintain business, while also having a permanent location. I wanted like to offer homemade bandanas and bows to sell, and use after finished grooms. I hoped to be an economically friendly grooming salon, as well as a salon that caters to helping groom dogs with difficult backgrounds. I have a fully functional website that is cute and mobile friendly. I wanted to pay all my employees above minimum wage.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I started with a small clientele base and used referral discount offerings to influence people to tell their friends about my salon. I attended Dog/Cat events in London, Ontario where I handed out business cards and salon coupons/brochures. I made sure to use Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to my advantage in posting the type of grooms the salon does while also showcasing that we enjoy working with more difficult dogs. I also took out flyers with coupons for the salon in the neighbourhood directly surrounding my location. I commissioned Brittany Cameron to make homemade bandanas and bows for my salon. I looked into building a website and bought a format that was compatible with computers and phones. I also had multiple people overview the website before publishing, and changed features of the site when receiving customer feedback.

What is your life like now?

My social media pages and website are booming with activity. I am selling out of the homemade bandanas regularly. I also have enough cliental to hire a bather for the groomers, while paying everyone above minimum wage.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I took this course because I wanted to learn what it takes to develop, start, and grow a business. I was in the process of planning my move to Haiti and I knew I did not want to work for a larger NGO unless I had too. I thought about my long term vision which is to open up my own not for profit or organization that is focused on community and human development. I knew that I would need more experience before I opened up my own not for profit, especially the hands on experience of living in Haiti to better understand the needs there and how I can contribute positively. I had to think of way to make money in Haiti while also enjoying what I do – I was in the stage of evaluating what success meant and how I defined it. My goal was to find a viable business opportunity in Haiti, and do the groundwork there to make sure this idea was actually possible through pop-ups to test the market. In the past year I have confirmed that this idea is an opportunity, and I am in the process of opening my own store, diversifying my products, and establishing a clientele.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I took this course to help equip myself and use a good framework to guide me as I developed my idea. I took the time to research the market and other companies with similar business strategies to learn from them. I stuck with what I knew first – start small with the types of products I wanted to sell rather than try to do everything all at once (I have a tendency to think large right away). I interviewed female entrepreneurs in Haiti who own retail stores and learned from their insights. I talked with potential customers about what types of products they would buy and at what price point to understand their needs. I went to India on a purchasing trip and to start making connections with stores and artisans there. I took the time to understand what is current and trendy, but also stayed true to classic style that will always sell.

What is your life like now?

I am proud of myself for taking the risk to explore this idea and turn it into a reality no matter how hard and challenging it has been. I have a high demand for my products and am continuing to find new customers. I am still working hard every day to sustain this business idea and figuring out how I can continuously improve it.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I was recommended the course from an equally creative and ambitious friend/co-worker. By joining the program, I was hoping to receive much needed guidance and clarity regarding starting a business. I had this idea, or dream per se, but even thinking about how to make that a reality was overwhelming. I wanted to believe in myself, but it seemed like an uphill battle completely in the dark.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Through out the course, I learned many new skills and was able to apply them while beginning my business. It was crucial to stay open minded and remember that people were always just trying to help vs. criticizing or belittling my ideas. It was important to balance both the “right now” and the “big picture” goals.

What is your life like now?

I consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to open my plant store! Once I obtained a greenhouse and the space to grow more plants, it was all about bringing in the clientele. It’s been hard work, but now we grow up to 30 different species in house, all while bringing in a variety of other options. We have been slowly developing fun workshops for both children and adults, at a reasonable fee. We are hoping to start branching out into aquatic plants soon!

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I decided to take this course last year because I had recently returned to Ottawa from an 8-month worldwide trip, and was at a crossroads in my life, which I used to reevaluate what I wanted to do with my life and decided to follow my passion of helping others and raising awareness about the environment, inspiring people to live more sustainably. I felt this program would help me achieve this goal by giving me the necessary knowledge, resources and support to launch a successful business.
During my travels, I was inspired to start an e-commerce business selling international goods that are ethical and sustainable. I went to many international markets, met with local producers, saw and purchased their beautiful crafts, heard some of their stories, and realized the importance of sharing producers’ stories with consumers to highlight how we are all interconnected to bring awareness to where our products come from. I decided I wanted to create a business with a transparent supply chain that would sell unique handmade products that support the people who made them and sharing producers’ story with consumers, while helping protecting the environment. My goal was to create a social enterprise that would sell high-quality and culturally important products to conscientious consumers who wanted to make a positive social and environmental impact through their purchase. My dream was to inspire others to become more mindful consumers, by selling products that are made with natural and recycled materials, with minimal and eco-alternative packaging and by connecting them to the producers who made these products by sharing their stories. I wanted to use my business as a means to provide a viable income to producers, supporting their crafts, culture and community, minimizing consumer impact on the environment and inspiring people to live more mindfully and sustainably.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Over the last year, I achieved my goals by setting a clear vision of my goal, following timelines and adjusting as necessary to changing circumstances, always keeping in mind the final goal and working towards it.

I utilized the resourced and support I was given during the course, including peer support/coaching and guidance from my mentor which inspired me and gave me courage to see my project through.

What is your life like now?

– have set up my website and : am currently selling to a small but committed and growing clientele, both online and wholesale to small businesses in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto with similar values; I am currently in discussion with stores in Vancouver to expand my business to the West coast.
– have set up my social media accounts: website, Facebook, Instagram and am regularly contributing online content to inspire consumers to live more mindfully and sustainably, etc. I will create some of my own content and feature/refer to bloggers with different but complimentary knowledge; Consumers often comment their thoughts on the topics presented and contribute new ideas for future content.
– have identified and established my product sources and have strong relationships with producers/cooperatives; I am sharing their stories on our website and social media platforms; consumer feedback indicates that they value knowing where their products come from and how their purchase is impacting producers in a positive way; I travel to the countries from which I source approximately once a year to select the products to include in my business.
– I am fulfilling my dream of raising awareness about environmental issues and inspiring others to be more mindful consumers supporting ethical/sustainably-made products. I have recently been invited to speak to high school students to share my experience of setting up a business and how travel has shaped who I am, raising my awareness of other cultures, environmental issues and the need to live more mindfully and sustainably. I hope to continue to inspire others to be agents for positive change and creating both a physical and online space for support and motivation to work towards this mindset and lifestyle.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted to gain a basic understanding of what people need to start a business on their own. I wanted to get an introduction into the skills most people use when becoming an entrepreneur.

This knowledge would help me transform those skills into something more suitable for my own needs when creating a business that fuels and funds my creative pursuits through corporate/client work.

By learning new skills, working harder than I ever have before and staying organized.

What is your life like now?

I’ve got a company, I have funding, or if I don’t need funding yet – I know a way to obtain funding when I do. I’ve decided on and formed a team, even if it’s just myself (that has to be by design). I’ve got a minimally viable product or at least a good prototype that I’m testing on the market. I have a plan to quit my job and work on my company full time if I haven’t already done that.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I decided to take this course because I wanted to be an entrepreneur all my life, but I never knew where to start. I didn’t have any experience in entrepreneurship either, so I was also looking for knowledge. I came across a business opportunity with a company called Enagic, and I immediately knew that this opportunity was right for me. In order to start and build my business, I needed to invest in 3 of their high ticket products. Since I was on social assistance and had trouble getting a job, I didn’t have 6k-10k to invest, nor could I get a loan or credit card, so I was immediately looking for other ways to come up with the money. I used my resourceful skills and searched day and night every day until I stumbled upon this course. I was hoping and praying that I could get a loan through this course after I learned what I needed to learn after completing the course. I also hoped that through this business, I would create other businesses down the line in my life.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I knew that the decision to finally become an entrepreneur was a big one, considering everything I was going through at the time. With a lot of my own research and this course, and in speaking to other people that have been successful in this business, I was able to come up with a solid plan in order to create the success that I’ve always dreamed of. I spent a lot of time around those who’s success I wished to create in my own life, and that was one of the crucial things to my success. I also wrote down my “why” and read it often whenever I was feeling discouraged. Reminding yourself of why you’re doing what you’re doing, keeps you motivated in harder times.

What is your life like now?

My life now is all that I’ve dreamed of. I have better mental, physical and financial health, I have business partners that I enjoy spending my time/working with, I have lots more ideas for other businesses I wish to create, I’ve paid off my student loans and the loans I used to start my business, and I’m now at a place where I’m so happy and grateful for every scary leap I took in this journey to get to where I am now.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

To start a mobile Pet grooming business. To one day have a mobile trailer or vehicle equipped with everything I need to get people’s pets groomed & maintained when they can’t or don’t want to leave their home. This is great for seniors, people with any disabilities, or even the stay at home mom who doesn’t have time for a grooming appointment. This would also help with quick tasks such as nail trims and ear cleaning to save a whole grooming appointment for pets. Veterinarians charge a lot for small animal nail trimming as well, so this was something I wanted to offer at a cheapER rate.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I started my business as a a Professional Pet Nail Trimming service. I did this to get my foot in the door, while I keep learning my Grooming Skills. I also did this because a shop I had worked at before, offered FREE nail trimming between grooming, and no one came! They just didn’t want to leave their home for something so “minor”. I also service pets with small maintenance needs such as pad shaving, ear cleaning, spot shaving if needed and bathing only at home. I have had some customers who were interested in home grooming as they didn’t want much length taken off their dogs. Just a bath and brush out. I do not have my trailer so I work in the customers home.

What is your life like now?

I have had lots of bookings for nails, ear cleaning and pad shaving. I have at least three appointments per week. I am working towards becoming a more practiced groomer with another grooming shop in my area, so my personal business can grow even more. My earnings are going up monthly, I have noticed. My customers LOVE me, no joke. They are so happy to have me come, they tell me I am so thoughtful and caring for their pets and what a great idea I have come up with. I even get hugs and offered coffee at most houses.

I decided to take this course after my final year of undergraduate studies. Finally, I know the type of career that I want to have and the personal goals that I want to accomplish. I’ve developed an entrepreneurial spirit, and after observing different business models within the city, I see various gaps and opportunities for improvement in the delivery of services, especially within the entertainment industry. In this year, I’ve been able to startup my event management company, coordinating and managing events including weddings and fundraisers. I’ve developed a steady clientele and have received many new opportunities from referrals.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I decided to take the course so that I could learn how to take the next step and get the clients I wanted and have enough of them to feel financially independent and to do what I enjoyed for work.
My dream was to be able to work and travel and not rely on working a stationary job for income.

I cut back on distractions that do not nourish my life. Social media for personal use is something that creates feelings of anxiety for me and also is a huge time waster. I find the time i am on it, i am comparing my life to others where i should be using that time to make my life what i want it to be.
Used my planner and stayed consistent when it came to goals. Also set small goals that were achievable and gave me confidence to keep going.

What is your life like now?

My life feels like it has purpose. Being able to create a place for people to come, get angry and have fun while doing it gives me a lot of joy. I know the feeling of feeling angry and unsure of how to release that energy and i have now found my outlet for that. We are taking a lot of online bookings and our getting a lot of media attention. This has been the number one hot spot for cooperate functions and stagettes.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I’d already created an online community (Forest Schooled) based around sharing stories, reflections, and resources for Forest School. The publishing of my book in September 2018 brought more attention to my work and interest in me delivering workshops, courses, keynotes, webinars and creating further resources for organizations. Individuals started reaching out asking questions and needing support. The need for professional learning support was apparent and I felt prepared to help. I also identified my love of nurturing projects and program development, rather than just delivering programs myself (I got bored) so identified consultancy/mentorship as an ideal fit for me. My goals were to grow Forest Schooled as a mentorship platform and networking “hub” for forest school practitioners worldwide.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I took stock of the resources and connections I already had in place, what gaps were, and what I needed to prioritize. I attended events as often as I could to meet people and network, ask questions, find out what services would help meet their needs (and wallets). I said yes to opportunities that fit my goals, and said no to those that didn’t (even though the income was enticing) to stay focused on the larger picture. I partnered with several people and organizations to form collaborative support systems to build off of others work, rather than compete.

What is your life like now?

I’ve formed a strong and active network of forest school practitioners in multiple countries (including USA, Canada, UK, and Ireland). I work for multiple forest school organizations offering strategic consultancy. I have 10+ personal clients who I support on a regular basis in building their programs and improving quality. I’ve delivered 6 workshops at conferences and other events in multiple countries, 1 keynote talk, and 2 webinars. I’ve also developed and delivered a graduate level course for the environmental education department of a university. My book has sold over 150 copies and is recommended by forest school training bodies in multiple countries. My success has brought me a reliable source of income where I can pay my bills and also stash some money away in savings for future plans.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I left a job that I thought was not helping me realize my potential for another job that appreciated me even less. I decided I did not want to fight for a seat at the table. I could build my own table and develop a better management method. I wanted property, to own my own house, and help people and community. I needed a start to help develop a business plan and I stumbled on this program with RISE just in time.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I learned as much as I could from the people around me. I sat through webinars and business programs and lessons. I built up my credit and equity. I searched out a property with everything I wanted and needed to best serve my clients. I found gaps to fill in the community that my competitor colleagues also served. I built my support group whose goals aligned with my own.

What is your life like now?

Now, I get up each morning on our acreage and join the tenants of Serene Passages for morning meditation. Later, some tenants tend to the garden while others prepare their own breakfast as they fuel up before the morning group therapy session. Clients who leave Serene Passages have maintained sobriety and have gone on to reach their own goals and projects. We’ve made mutually beneficial connections with established institutions of the recovery community and employers who offer flexible employment for our clients. We are developing a non profit arm of Serene Passages: a funded transitional home to alleviate long waitlists for recovery houses.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

At the time, I was very unmotivated and lost with my businesses. I have three small businesses that were only making little income. I want a business that can help pay off my debts, that people hear about and search for online because word of mouth is just so persuasive, more returning customers, always satisfied customers, possibly one day grow my business so that I do not always have to be working.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Once realizing which of the three was more lucrative I finally chose that I should concentrate on one. Taking the steps to manage my time better, focusing more on the many different ways to find clients, and making my business more than just a sewing shop but also a place where people can recycle old clothes and learn to sew, as well as partake in events like fashions shows and clothing swaps, I have been able to make my business into one I was dreaming of.

What is your life like now?

Now debt free, I have been able to grow my business and hire people to work for me! people who appreciate working for me! I can now travel more often! I could even possibly sell my business and retire!

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I didn’t know how to start a business and needed a push-start, to get around people that knew how to and gave me the encouragement I needed in order to take the leap into business ownership.
I thought about how I wanted to own my own business, set my own hours, revolutionize the industry that I step foot in, help employees to find something that they can do that allows them the time to spend with their loved ones, and love coming to work.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I put in a lot of time and effort on the forefront, but after about 6 months, the business came to life, people started to recognize our brand and what we were doing. There was a lot of times that I didn’t know what to do, but I would read a book and say some prayers and a week later, sometimes a few days, I would get the answer I needed.

I’ve helped publish 1 New York Times Best Seller, and I believe that it’s going on to win a Pulitzer Prize this year. The way things are moving and shaking is incredible. This is where we’re at currently, but always forward looking for the upcoming change or installment!

I got my shopify site and desired name for my online boutique/ T-shirt business up and running. Got my sellers permit. It got into a harder process from there. I achieved my goals by writing a clear business plan, setting out a path for me to follow. I am set up to attend four bigger arts/crafts fairs each year, including being a vendor at Pride celebrations.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I decided to take the course because I realized it was a good opportunity to lay the groundwork for a successful, growing business mindset. At the time I had an idea for an all natural beauty/cosmetic business, but I decided to stick with my roots and develop a model for a film/tv/media related business venture. My goals and dreams were and are to create female driven media that relates the complexity of being alive at this conflicting time; stories about women that convey emotion, psychology, relationships, vulnerability and insecurity, that is honest, heartfelt, and real.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

This past year I pursued a number of different ventures and focused on personal growth as well as business success. I launched my own Etsy business and started my yoga teacher training, and used my organizational skills to keep my life and commitments compartmentalized. I used my instincts and insight to look deeply into what I really wanted to grow in my life. During COVID I was very successful in changing personal habits that were holding me back from growing. Right now I’m focusing on improving my technical skills in a number of creative and artistic areas, as well as on doing the things that scare me most in relation to business.

What is your life like now?

My life is a constant process of looking at what needs to be adjusted and grown in order to keep myself challenged, engaged, and moving forward. I handle many personal responsibilities with doing my best to self care and nourish my creative/artistic visions. I’m nearly wrapped on my first short film that I wrote, directed, produced, and starred in. I also created the music that will be used in the film this summer (I sing too) and am currently in the process of cutting the film with editing software myself. Right now I’m organizing different appointments with acting agents as well as organizing new projects for film that I will write, direct, and act in.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

With physical and mental health issues complicating my original business plan, I needed to re-visit how everything was structured. My goal: to make a plan that was flexible and health-friendly. It needs to fit within my values and my needs primarily, and then see how those can fit within business.

The goal. A modular business plan that fits my chronic health requirements as they naturally ebb and flow throughout the year.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Careful analysis of what those new health needs are and how they vary.
What those needs translate to, business wise, at their highest and lowest.
How to create a workable viable product at every stage, thus creating a modular business plan.
Find a work flow that smoothly incorporates modular product development without over encumbering the process.

What is your life like now?

My business integrates well into my life, I am able to expand and contract it around my health as required while still maintaining a strong routine. I get products made and posted for sale regularly. Marketing material, especially visual marketing material like photos, are just a natural process of the production of the products, and only take some minor extra steps to generate. I’ve figured out a good division of labor to keep my business flowing effectively and determined what aspects I may need to outsource in the future.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I’ve always told myself that I am going to be a millionaire. I want to show my daughter that If you set you’re mind to it, anything can happen.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

My life’s been extremely unstable and I go through alot of jobs although I always have very good moments. I need to have a stable backbone of a self created wealth that is forever valuable so I know I will never fall again.

What is your life like now?

Well I basically raised myself, grew up in a very small town in northern ontario. I haven’t had much support. I’ve traveled canada alone, I’ve lived in Vancouver for a year alone. I’ve had alot of different types of jobs. I do consider myself to be the most valuable in finding ways to make the company I worked for more valuable.
I have a 1 year old daughter. I am single though. My last 3 jobs didn’t pay me at all and that was 4 months of valuable time gone. I lost everything. That won’t stop me though!

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted to begin the journey towards providing services and products that others could benefit from, while sustaining employment opportunities for myself and other people who want to do this important work. I was hoping I could be successful in a year’s time and be confident that this could be sustained over time.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

-business development was accounted for, from budgeting to marketing to refining our finished products and services. To do this, I started slow, and built up my assets and offers over time. I also made sure that I got a very good sense of my customers, especially as they interacted with my products and services, during the installation/service day and over time.

What is your life like now?

Oh it’s amazing to have such a network of people to support the business! It makes me feel so good that people have food for the future and the knowledge to share with their families.

Helped many people, planted multiple pollinator gardens, EFGs, tree guilds. Gone back to see the peoples gardens we planted last year, and they are thriving! They have learnt to cultivate plants and care for them, and they can observe pollinators enjoy the space. They feel inspired and are successful, sharing this with others and encouraging them to do the same!!! Seeing more neighbours growing food to share with one another.

more young people employed and interested in growing local food

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

Depression taking over and seeing a few tragic incidents in the past 6 months that made me want to change my work. Working for a non- profit and seeing the change that could be made but still in the western world. Seeing that there are not a lot of indigenous business in my area and would like to change that. My goals were to start working for myself so I can make changes and not have to wait for a bigger organization to say that doesn’t fit. Seeing and being one of those indigenous youth that are fed up with the world and wanting to make change even just for youth and families in my community.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I haven’t achieved much for my business other then doing canoe trips and plan sessions with externals to lead a week long event in my community and just made the planning stages because of Covid and the community went into a state of emergency.

Living close to my community is great so moving from Toronto to be closer and to hopefully make a business in the community. For my business I have been working behind the scenes as trip leads, for 3 canoe excursions around our territory. I have also made partnerships with Taking it Global, JAYU, and friends that are presenters in the LGBTQ2 community and indigenous art wanting to partner and do programs/ events in communities.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted the opportunity to learn more about building a business plan. But the largest part of that was about tackling financials and getting those hard skills for my business. I felt ready, but more importantly, I truly believed in my business idea.

My goal was to get my business idea off the ground with the confidence of competence. In terms of my business, I wanted to sign on at least 7 designers, and expand into menswear. While beginning the plans for developing an algorithm for sizing.

I love fashion, and my dream is to get the opportunity to go to new york fashion week as a person who can make meaningful change in the industry.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Hard work and persistence. I kept telling myself, even when I had stopped believing I could do it, that I absolutely could. My 2020/2021 mantra was “a setback isn’t a reason to give up, keep moving forward”.

Understanding that I don’t always know what I don’t know. I was always willing to learn things outside of my comfort zone, and even started loving it.

What is your life like now?

Well, I did it!

Our selection system is up and running, and getting better all the time. We have found a great balance for taking in customer reviews and using them to fine tune the selection system. Compared to industry average, our rate of returns are 40% lower than other retailers who do not have the selection options we do. That means carbon emission have gone down too!

I signed on several extremely talented designers. We are now working on their back end manufacturing in order to bring safe work to factory workers overseas in countries like the Philippines, Bali, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This will allow the designers to do more controlled, and short runs, resulting in lower emissions, no chemical/dye dumping, and less fabric thrown away or unused.

We have successfully expanded into menswear, and have developed a full selection system. We are now preparing to build the algorithm for even more perfected sizing. Soon we will be ready to hire developers!

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I saw the opportunity and jumped on it as I immediately saw the value in this free course. I am passionate about always learning and advancing my skills, and I can feel my confidence building as I go through this course. At the time, I just knew I wanted to sell my art, I wanted to learn how to market myself and find a way to get my name out there.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

When COVID hit I was faced with a decision. Make some deliberate moves to come out of this stronger, or lose all of the progress I’ve been working on for so long. I developed a healthy routine, began seeking out knowledge, found solace in exercise and sought out professional, regular mental health help. This project started as a way to fund my mental health help, and I hope to begin a small grants program for individuals to access mental health care regardless of stigma, location or income.

What is your life like now?

After graduating my course in July and starting a new job, I have collected a myriad of new professional accomplishments, experience and education. I have gained confidence in my ability to seek out new opportunities and pursue them. I have exceeded my organizations fundraising amounts for 2019 in only 6 months of working there, developed social media marketing skills and utilized them in other aspects of my life. I have not stopped painting since beginning my Kirbys Collections business. I feel that the marketing and business I gain from my part time job complements what I wish to accomplish with Kirbys Collections

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

As a first generation female student who strongly believes in the power that education has to improve economic development in societies, I knew that after earning a university BBA degree, and finding myself working in a large bank where I was spending long hours of my time working 80 hours a week only to end up losing that same job I cherished after encountering burn-out and increased symptoms of fibromyalgia, followed by a longstanding spiral of depression and increased anxieties, that I needed a change.

I began to realized that I could make a larger social and personal impact if I were to pursue entrepreneurship and e-commerce, and I would be doing what was most sustainable for me given the challenges that I experience day to day due to my symptoms.

I have endeavoured on numerous project ideas that I sought out to implement in the last two years but I was always plagued by fear of ‘what if’ and became very risk averse to my ideas. Since coming across this course I knew that it would be a good idea to participate and refresh my soft skills and work on building up the confidence I needed to execute my ideas and business decisions strategically and successfully. I moved from the idea on developing multiple products and went as far as sourcing, until finally landing an idea for an app that I am ever so passionate about as it allows me to work on improving academic experience for high school students who want to learn more about how they can tap into their passions and gain exposure in the workplace prior to starting their post-secondary studies.

On a more personal level, being able to do an internship in the summer of the 11th grade in New York, strongly helped motivate my post-secondary educational and career goals which I am very grateful for having had the opportunity to begin with. I would like to provide students with the same opportunities that they can learn about and be able to connect with professionals directly using an app that I am still building out the requirements for. I think it will be a pivotal career experience.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I worked diligently and sacrificed my social life in order to learn everything about every industry I intended to pursue. I generated a lot of unique business ideas and conjectured about whether they were feasible. I learned how to adapt to risk and continue to keep myself up and coming with the newest trends and softwares.

What is your life like now?

I’ve incorporated, finally. After two years of being extremely indecisive and afraid of taking on risks due to my severe anxieties.

I have made numerous connections and am getting back into the networking circle that I missed out on significantly after I suffered from a severe depression. My confidence is the highest it has been in a long time and I have a lot of business goals that I am concurrently working on as a serial entrepreneur which is a challenge I am happy to be able to take on.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I have a degree and background in business and have worked and volunteered in the non-profit space for many years. I have sparked a particular interest in how businesses and corporations give and the qualitative and quantitative benefits that philanthropy can have for them. As a professional fundraiser I have worked with many businesses in their fundraising efforts, whether it be an event, sponsorship, out-right donations, employee giving or otherwise. Some larger businesses, like telus and coast capital, had community investment teams to manage their strategic giving, while others were making their decisions one-off and with no real idea of how they could leverage philanthropy to further their business. This is where my idea was born. I want to provide advising services to businesses, big and small, as to how philanthropy can impact their triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) thrugh marketing, employee engagement, tax credits, and more. Additionally, I want to help them assess their current social impact and create more functional and beneficial philanthropy programming.

I also want to use my skills to support nonprofits. I have been fortunate sit on board and councils of granting organisations where I learnt what funders are looking for, and to work at a number of larger non-profit organisations such as the Children’s Health Foundation and UVic and where I have learned fundraising systems, programs, and best practice. I would like to support smaller nonprofits who are not able to have many (or any) fundraising staff in their efforts to raise money for their cause through campaigns, grants, events, annual giving, appeals, and other fundraising avenues.

At the time, I already had the idea for a Virtual Assistance Agency and my goal was to quit my full time job and have my first client by the end of 2020.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I met my goal of quitting my full time job by the end of summer to focus on my business which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made because my job was emotionally and mentally draining. I feel like I am more motivated to achieve my second goal of having my first client by the end of 2020

What is your life like now?

At the moment, I am unemployed and do some side jobs to meet my necessities. Most of the day I spend at home doing freelance work or helping my mom with her business as I have experience with admin and operations. It might not sound like I have accomplished a lot but this is exactly where I wanted to be at the beginning of the year and it feels amazing. I still have some time to meet my second goal and I plan to be working on my business full time in the new year which means I’ll have around 6-10 clients a month

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I want to run a successful dog training business that revolutionizes the way people relate to their dogs. I want to teach people not just training, but how to understand their dog better and get the most out of their relationship. I need help organizing, staying motivated, and bookkeeping. I wanted to take this course to help me develop a sound business so I can help make the world a better place and be my best self.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

While I didn’t do as much of the course as I intended, I do plan on finishing it now that I have worked on my foundations and mental health. Over the last year I have accumulated clients, continued my dog training education, started a volunteer position with an experienced trainer, and have been working on my mental health so I can run a business in a way I can be proud of.

What is your life like now?

I have a few clients, I make about $700 a month. What I am most proud of is how I’ve grown in confidence. I still have a long way to go. I helped a reactive and nervous dog gain confidence, helped an under stimulated neurotic dog get what she needs. I help service dog handlers. I worked a bit with some kids to help them get started on training their own dogs. Honestly, I feel like I am still at %15 and have so much work ahead of me to really accomplish what I hope for, but I am ready now and unafraid of the journey. I have learned so much in regards to training. I am proud that I am a more accountable and resilient person. I know I can develop this project into my dreams.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wanted to make changes in my life to transition into working on more meaningful projects because I didn’t feel like I really “fit” into traditional jobs or 9 to 5 life. I wanted to eliminate the confines of those types of opportunities and use my passions and problem solving skills to focus on making change in areas that I really care about.

My goals, dreams, and ambitions at that time were to create business ideas – and ultimately a business – that would create positive change related to LGBTQ+ issues and their intersectionality with mental health, while finding enough financial success that my business would cover my costs of living and allow me to focus my time and energy on causes that really matter to me.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I took a course through Rise to learn more about entrepreneurship and gain the skills and knowledge that I feel I am missing to be able to make my ideas and ventures sustainable and effective. Using the knowledge I gained, I was able to create a business plan that I then followed to ultimately create a successful, meaningful business. I turned to my friends, my therapist and my mentors for help when things were challenging.

What is your life like now?

My life is better than I ever imagined it could be. I get to spend my days working on project that really mean something to me, rather than forcing myself to do work that is only okay but unfulfilling just to make money so I can pay my bills. The work is hard, but I don’t mind because I like spending time on my business projects and the tasks are things I genuinely want to do. I don’t really see it as “work” per se. I make more than enough money to cover my cost of living and am even able to start saving money to eventually buy my own house. I have been able to positively impact the lives of a lot of people and have seen the real time improvement in diverse visibility for all different types of LGBTQ+ identities, and the positive impact that’s had in creating community and improving the mental health and sense of belonging for queer-identifying folks. I feel proud of my accomplishments, and I most importantly feel happy because I get to do things that I believe have meaning and purpose.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I decided to apply for this program last year because I had an idea that I had started but got stuck in a sense of where to go from there. I was in a spot where I needed an income and didn’t know what to do. I realized there is a lot that goes into staring a business I do not understand and I am somebody who wants to know what I am doing is correct and will help keep me moving forward.

I have a lot to learn and the program looked like an excellent opportunity to take part in. My dream is to have my business up and running and organized to the best of my ability. I would love to have a system in place that helps things run smoothly.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

Last year I was lucky enough to take place in the Birchmount Work-placement Program. In that program I learned the basics to resume building and interviewing for a job. But with that came so much more then just what I was there to learn. I gained so much more confidence in my abilities and my art skills that I had to push doing a small crafts business. And the program helped my fund my dream.

They pushed me to go for it and I did. I came up with and idea, a name and logo. I even registered my business name with Ontario!

I recently started investing in my business by buying molds and decorations to practice and create products to sell. I surprised myself and actually got a small instagram run business up and going with some sales here and there. Starting off with just a few products to choose from.

I have also been doing some free online courses to learn as much as I can. They helped me do the steps I have completed starting my business.

And I also got into Rise!! At the perfect time too. I was finished my other program and had no idea what to do. Didn’t know where I was going next until I got the news I was taking part in this program starting 2021!

What is your life like now?

The demand grew, people are asking for specific things to be made for them. It’s been so cool getting truly custom orders.

More and more people are showing interest in what I am making. Got a good selection of molds to be made. I am in the process of making some currently.

I have old friends from high school and other connections with similar craft businesses (not the same as mine at all) that want to colab with me and we are in the works of planning that!

I recently set up a business banking account and I am starting up my Etsy store. I will be holding a “grand opening” hopefully soon!!

I had over $10,000 in sales over the 2 month holiday season, and reached my sales goal for January in the first week.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

A year ago I was preparing myself to begin mapping out and building my business. Though, while I had a very vivid and detailed vision of what I wanted my business to become, I was lacking in the knoowledge needed to make that happen, let alone in the best way possible.
I was educating myself through online research and studying books, and then I was introduced to the RISE program, through a Facebook friend- and I immediately thought it was the ideal course for me to start out with.
I was confident it would gift me a basic foundation of the knowledge and understanding it takes to evolve my idea to full fruition.
My goals were to gain that solid foundation, and then go on to make use of it, building/mapping out my ‘game-plan’, so to speak, and then taking the necessary next steps (such as my next course, to receive my coaching credentials) to getting my business, open for business.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I am assuming most of this answer will come from the course itself, I am here to learn how to achieve these goals, so I am unsure how to answer this question accurately?… (Using the resources, knowledge and instruction of the RISE program?)

What is your life like now?

Well, after completing the RISE course I had a sound business plan and had mapped out the steps I needed to take. I went on to receive my Coaching licence/certification, and that allowed me to officially get my business up and running, so to speak.
Now I am a practicing coach and I have many goals to expland my business this next year.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I was laid off from my job just as CERB ended and I was thinking that I would love to be in charge of my making own income, as opposed to making someone else’s income for them. Now that I work for myself I make enough money to save for a house, pay for physio, and I can start planning to have a kid in a few years. This year was great for building my confidence to make my own ding dang way in the world.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I made a plan and I actually followed through with it. At first it was hard but I kept going, and eventually it worked. I got through one daily to-do list at a time.

What is your life like now?

Wow I have people calling me all the time, “bring me more t shirts!!,” they scream. I am able to make enough money to support myself and pay artists well to produce designs for merchandise in the store. Everything always sells out. We are able to fundraise for small orgs and individuals through selling beautifully designed items at no cost to the participant, and that is pretty neat. There is more demand than my business parter and I were able to meet, so we are thinking about bringing on another designer.

I decided to take this course because I was attending college in the Fall of 2021. The lessons most definitely prepared me for college. My dream for my business was to have my beauty business as a “go-to” business for teens and millennials.

Lastly, I completed my last goal by creating a fun and easy to use website for my customers to buy orders online.

What is your life like now?

My business sales have grown since last year. My audience increased immensely due to advertisements on my social media platforms. I added new products to sell to my audience and found trustworthy vendors for them. I am always busy with orders and will soon hire people to work for me. Sooner or later by the next 3 years or so I know my business will gain profitability.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I wasn’t making a lot of money last year and barely got hours at the place I was working at. I had a desire to start my own business and love doing what I’m doing. My faith is very important to me and I definitely wanted to keep it at the forefront of all I do so I felt this was a good step for me to make. I didn’t know how to put into action all I wanted to do so I enrolled in this course to learn more. My goal at this time was to produce content to encourage people. My dream was to sell stickers, journals, pens & bookmarks to share Jesus and faith with people.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I had to make sacrifices and dedicate a lot of time and effort to achieve my goals over the last year. I stayed in prayer and made sure to put my relationship with God first. I asked a lot of questions to those who are older than me and pursuing business and ministry. I asked for help and guidance from God and others when I needed it. I stayed willing to learn and grow throughout it all and in the hardest seasons, I didn’t quit. I prioritized taking breaks and making sure I slept through the nights. I made sure I ate healthily and took care of my body so that I’m able to do the things that I want to do.

What is your life like now?

My life right now is a dream come true! I’ve been able to interview and collab with many Christian businesses to produce bookmarks and stickers. I’ve also been able to travel and visit many youth groups to share my testimony and journey. I am so happy to be able to donate 20% of my income to charities and churches around the world. I am truly blessed and forever thankful for what God has done and is doing through me!

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I decided to apply to this program because I was ready to give my all towards creating and launching this business idea, God placed upon my heart. I wanted to be present, and work alongside the program, and not fall behind, and procrastinate the vision. I desire to stick through the process to see its full manifestation; give this vision a fair shot.
I realized that working/part-time , and at a job, I didn’t like wasn’t what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to have to sacrifice my overall wellbeing just to make a couple of dollars, which ran through my fingers. I didn’t want to always be in a place of financial lack, wondering where my next paycheck would come, be in creativity anxiety, and most importantly disobedient to God’s plan and instruction for my life. My goals last year was to work part-time and get the business/plan together and hopefully launch. I desired to be further along in my brand awareness. I become over-exhausted, lazy, undisciplined and lacked the motivation to put in the work.

Last year I don’t think I accomplished a lot, I think some things are still left unfinished. So I wouldn’t consider many accomplishments, unfortunately. For instance, I didn’t get to complete all my driving lessons and obtaining my G2. I realize I took the initiative to sign up for the Somatic Trauma therapy course but never finished going through it.
However, I graduated from my four uni program. I cut my hair off and started the process of loving my hair and rebuilding self-love, which I believed I completed in that content. I launched my first online event Take Back your mind 2 and secured a full-time job in December. Most importantly, right when I thought i wasn’t gonna able to achieve any of my goals, due to the pandemic, and my situation. I got money in my bank, that allowed me to pay off my credit card loan IN FULL. So now praise God, I only have to focus on my student loans.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

1. I started to reflect on what I wanted and looked at how to achieve it
2. I started planning, and praying in advance
3. I held on to faith, despite up and down insecure thoughts, and believe God would make a way out of no way.
4. I stuck out the process when I felt like giving up, I kept the end goal in my head and in proper perspective, I encouraged myself.

What is your life like now?

My life right now I believe is at a peak point. Where I’m getting into the nitty-gritty, of the work that’s necessary to set up my life. I am slowly walking into new opportunities. I have the flexibility, grace and time to get myself together and into a great routine and work ethic.

I have nothing to brag about yet concerning my business. However, so far I stepped out of my comfort zone and applied for this program and the Tiphani entrepreneurship program that cost me my bank. I almost completed my goal of 2500 in my emergency fund but decided to take a risk, an investment. I also applied to be apart of AROBA, despite the fact that it’s a public speaking opportunity, and I’ve never done been on a panel discussion, especially concerning things I’m passionate about. So this will be something different for me, and exciting. Looking forward to all the opportunities, and open doors to come, with joy and preparation.

I have worked extremely hard to build up my business so far. I do feel like I’ve expended a lot of time with trial and error. I asked for help whenever it was made available to me and improved my social skills.

What is your life like now?

I’m extremely busy all of the time. I still work 3-4 days a week in addition to running this business. I am happy to have gained a big enough following and am getting in a steady flow of sales. I am full of new and exciting ideas that can’t wait to play around with. I have donated $1300 so far to the charity that my business supports and it feels great.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

Rise course caught my attention in the midst of a tough covid winter, when I was pushing through to make my dream of a floating bakery come true. I was just in the midst of a pastry arts program and in the last year of my immigration before I can finally apply for my permanent residency (PR). I knew I have this dream, but felt there is a big gap between the idea and the realisation, having a lot to figure out, including the business plan and cash flow, deciding how to start affordably before the immigration process allows me to get funding), figuring out what’s the best location on Cortes to be available to enough customers, and how to get them to come to me and buy from me even if it’s not the busy summer season. I saw the course and realised this is the push I need. That it will give me the needed education in business areas like how to design the business so it stays afloat, how to predict changing seasons cash flow, how to refine the idea of my target customer and aim it well at him, especially when my target customer groups are at least two and they differ a lot from each other, ranging from boating summer tourists from Vancouver/Vancouver island with a not so limited budget, to ordinary local folks that are looking for a simple handy breakfast treat and a cup of something warm to go, reaching for fresh instead of the prepackaged supermarket stuff.
I also felt that the course will give me the much needed support in terms of motivation when the doubts arise or when there’s a challenge that I have never came across before.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

A year from now I will be at the end of a winter season 2021/2022. Meaning I spent the first Fall/Winter testing my customer base mainly built from locals, either using the foodtruck or the rented out Squirrel cove restaurant space, getting ready for the first busy summer season, twitching the menu and hiring summer staff to help me serve the customers, bake and make lunch items. I have built a loyal base of locals buying weekly bake boxes, learned the flow of their needs based on the sales during the winter months, I have learned their reactions and preferences directly selling to them at the local farmer’s markets at Mansons on Fridays and at the Gorge on Saturdays, and I developed a strong relationship with the Squirel Cove store and the Gorge store, selling goods through them – bread and breakfast items that the local crowd wants.
I have also figured out what is the best way for delivery, and maybe even did some popups to test the meal items that could be used to create extra revenue – lunch sandwiches, pizza, local seafood&farms dinners. I have figured out all my suppliers and made sure they’re delivering me stock the right days, enough of it without having unnecessary extras. And I built a full branding, website and strong socials with the help of a web designer and a graphic designer/illustrator, together with a very clear communication to my customers that helps them understand my offer and informs them of what all is there, without them feeling too confused with always-changing rules and hours (learning mistakes from the Co-op), and that has a well-presented menu with interesting appealing options clearly marketed and using better fresh products to cook (learning from the Gorge restaurant & Sunflower food truck & Bear picnic food truck).

By this point, I’m either holding my permanent residency in hands, or I’m just waiting for a final confirmation, to be fully cleared for the summer to come and to get funding if needed for more growth (equipment/staff/reconstruction or addition of a second sale spot to cover the ferry and boat traffic both). I am one step closer to a full realisation of the floating bakery, moving the space to the water by the next two years, with a solid base of customers created to have a more solid ground for a large investment cost.

What is your life like now?

I have a nice flow of a working schedule, knowing how much to bake when, how to bake efficiently without spending unnecessary time on items, a good control of the costs like time, ingredients and waste of the unsold under control, with a good solution what to do with the unsold, creating a balance between being sold out too early and having too much to give away at the end of the day. I am feeling inspired for the summer season to come, thinking out of the box and not getting stuck with easy money no fun foods like frozen fries and cheap burgers. I am steadily improving my income, going towards my thriving number, having an adjusted budget for the summer to come, creating new business relationship with Refuge Cove Store and maybe even the Gorge Restaurant to offer them desserts for their dinner menus.
I have a solid game plan for covering the ferry line sales with some sort of bakes&coffee stand, with an employee ready to be there selling the products for me when the summer time comes, maybe already testing it slowly on the winter crowd, to see what may be missing or needed to adjust.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

My goals were to become self-employed and become fully independent in terms of income. I wanted to provide a much-needed service to the community while also making a sustainable and reliable future for myself.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I achieved my goals with a positive attitude, an open mindset, and a vision for the future; Short and long term. Combined with the knowledge and skills I gained by taking courses such as Rise and extensive research.

What is your life like now?

As of a year from when I first begun the rise course, much has changed. I have acquired funding, have a business plan, and are ready to obtain property to build my building footprint upon. I also have a company name and much more sense of what the future hold for my brand.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I had this idea of my own bakery in my head for a while, I just never really could make up my mind about what’s the best possible way to tackle the challenge. When the course popped up on my FB feed, I was in pastry school, and the distanced image of my own baking business was there to be realised sometimes in next 3 years. I realised this RISE course may bring me the clarification I need – it will ask me the crucial questions like “how will you exactly make money”, “what does the business model look like” “what’s the expectation for the first 3 years of the business running” etc. I knew I don’t know practically anything about the business part of it. I knew marketing, and I know enthusiasm and drive, and baking better every day, but I really needed a professional helping hand with the realistic shape-setting plan that will help me keep my numbers afloat and help me on paper to see if I’m on a good path forward or if I need to adjust things as I go.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

When I finished the RISE course, and also finished my pastry chef studies at practically the same time, I finally also decided how to approach the game. I made up my mind about what I want and what I don’t want my business to be like, I decided that I want to really focus mainly on the baking that makes me happy and not necessarily chase money on cooking lunches to create extra revenue if it means no baking time left, and I decided to take it easy during the first few months due covid summer and first get my immigration in order. I got my permanent residency and therefore became eligible to receive all sorts of funding and investments to help me kick start the bigger scale business.

What is your life like now?

Becuase I used the Fall and Winter 2021 to slowly but steadily touch the waters, I got to know my customers well without being overwhelmed with starting too big urgently in the covid summer of uncertainty for tourism. I got to relocate back to my island and took time to put things in order – I got my branding done thanks to my friends illustrators and web designers, I set up a good easily navigated ordering system for specials and larger orders to have it ready for the summer rush, I played around different styles to make sure I really know what I want my style/menu to be. I tested my baking space (wherever it ended up being a Squirrel cove rental or my own space at Murray’s or somewhere completely different), I figured out what tools and equipment will be really necessary and not just a luxury to have for the summer, and I stabilised my finances a little bit, to have a little bit of padding should there be a challenge. I established my name amongst Cortesians and also taught people to check me out on social media to figure out what’s on this week, and I convinced them that ordering with me is smart and convenient and great, and the locals by now got used to ordering a full breakfast box from me of treats, and they know now where to go when in need of a great whole pie or a cake or a fancy chocolate for someone dear. I am preparing for the summer season 2022, getting ready to hire my first few staff, and because of all this, I have a better idea of what I can do alone (or with a small help) and what I may need from the help to do for me, so I can efficiently use their extra pair of hands at the right spot. I’m setting up a summer lunch menu and testing it with popups and letting folks decide, and I made deals with my local fishermen to use their lovely products and hiring someone to cook it for my customers so I don’t have to spend days by the stove.

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

An idea I’ve had for a very long time. Feeling like there was something MISSING in my life, some sort of call I wasn’t answering, even though I led a very comfortable sort of life with a respected career. My goals were to be able to start a business and replace my income using that business. The true goal was to create a network and my own job that I would be fully immersed in and excited about; and to create dream opportunities for other people who shared a similar vision. Last year, I was beating myself up over not doing anything, but at the same time being paralyzed by fear, too much choice and doubting everything I thought.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I started prototyping first. Once the product was made, I campaigned on Kickstarter to gain a loyal following and found manufacturers to make the product.

What is your life like now?

It’s a dream come true. Now that I have my product flying off the shelves, I can expand to more ventures based on the product. I can start creating custom systems for restaurants, homes and schools. An educational component that teaches kids (and adults) where their food really comes from. Mixing old-school techniques of preservation and preparing, with modern tech that allows all types of food to be in-season all the time. A small cafe based on our home-grown food as well

Your Story

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

Last year, my goal was to successfully scale my business up to $200,000 in revenue. I signed up for Rise in order to get the momentum going, and to get a clearer picture of my business structure. My goals were to get $5,000 in seed funding to create samples, to find a business partner to work with, to grow my online sales, and to start getting my items into retail.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I stopped making excuses and started doing what I could to grow my business, even if it scared me. I took on a partner to help me with my business strategy so I could stay in my zone of genius, which is designing garments and making art. I talked to my current and future customers to get feedback on my designs. I went to the effort of introducing myself and my work to retailers, designers, and anyone who could help me in order to grow my network. I got super clear on what I wanted to create and what need I wanted to serve. I approached everything with playfulness, innovation, and creativity to create a magnetic brand. I wasn’t afraid to ask for help when I needed it.

What is your life like now?

I’ve been able to earn a comfortable income from my business. I moved to Montreal, live in a beautiful apartment with my fiance and two cats. My garments are sold online, at small independent boutiques, and even at Simon’s. Our brand has a huge following on social media (over 50k followers!), and our customers love us. Working with a partner has made my life so much easier, I do what I love more than anything else. Business isn’t the only thing in my life, I have the freedom to travel, work when I want, and can delegate the tasks that don’t excite me.

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

I’ve always had the dream to open my own restaurant, but I had no idea how to get there as I’ve never been in the food industry. I also want to create a business that allows for my husband to work while on disability. A small pop up that turns into a big business would be a great way to get him feel more valued.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

I essentially just never stopped trying. The biggest goal I had over the last year was moving to a new apartment as out last landlord and friend was looking to sell the house we were living in. I kept searching until we found a plan. I almost didn’t put in the application, but my husband convinced me to do it as we basically had nothing to lose

What is your life like now?

I’m currently working for Shopify, which is one of the biggest ecommerce platforms on the planet. I have done work all over the world in terms of web design, ecommerce, graphic design, and social media. I have made a business that works with local non-profits like big brothers big sisters and energy for opportunity. Above all else, I’ve gotten this far because my husband has supported me throughout everything

What made you decide to take this course last year? What were your goals/dreams/ambitions at the time?

For the last 6 years I have developed my filmmaking ability, and continued to do freelance work as a side gig while I maintained other regular jobs. Over the course of the last year, I have taken a variety of webinars and done a ton of my own research on how to start and operate my own business. During this time I also continued to find new clients and diversify my approach to the work that I was doing for them. But being self driven means often only having yourself to look to for advice, and I always craved the mentorship of people who have already created and maintained their own successful businesses. Over the last year I made a promise to myself to invest as much time into my own company as I had into other people’s goals, and though I know what I want in life, I’d give anything to learn the right way to do it.

How did you achieve your goals over the last year?

finally officialised my own company through the government, attended webinars, did lots of my own research and interviewed other people who started their own businesses. I also started actively seeking out clients, created my own website, and have attempted to get more involved in online communities. I also have updated my pre-existing content to be more marketable (ie demo reels, website updates, social media engagement)

What is your life like now?

All the things mentioned above were huge accomplishments for me. truly having the confidence in myself to take risks and connect with people, find my own clients outside of the regular pool of people who were already aware of my work. My biggest accomplishment was to start writing again. In the last year, I have written a TV Show pilot, a web series and a horror short. And, since I started this class, I am filming my first ever short (before I was mostly involved in just the production aspect of filmmaking) and it feels amazing to start creating the content I want to create, instead of just what my clients want. It’s been a wonderful adventure and things are already moving at a way faster pace than I ever anticipated! I’ve already found new clients and potential clients, and other like-minded individuals,
